It’s been quite some time since I got my hands on a Huawei smartphone, and I’m very happy to say that it’s still a very enjoyable everyday device that can compete with other competitors. That being said, Huawei recently announced a new entry-level smartphone, the Huawei nova Y61.
Design
The phone is very comfortable to hold in your hands and feels very familiar. The power button (which also doubles as a fingerprint scanner) and volume buttons are located on the right while the sim tray is located on the left and supports two sim cards . At the bottom of the phone is your USB Type-C port which supports HUAWEI’s 22.5W SuperCharge and a 3.5mm headphone jack which is becoming a rare commodity nowadays.
The Nova Y61 also features a 6.52-inch LCD display with HD+ resolution (1600 x 720 pixels), 60Hz refresh rate, and supports up to 16.7 million colors. The device itself is relatively light at 188g and measures 164.28mm x 75.8mm x 8.94mm. The phone Features a star effect finish and comes in three shiny colors: Midnight Black, Sapphire Blue, and Mint Green. Our review unit is the Mint Green variant.
Camera
For cameras the Nova Y61 runs a Triple Camera setup at the back with a 50MP F1.8 Main camera, a F2.4 Macro and a F2.4 depth sensor and supports image resolutions to 8,192 × 6,144 pixels but it varies depending on shooting conditions. As for video quality the phone is more than capable of shooting at 1080P @ 60FPS. Taking pictures with the 50MP sensor turned out to be quite impressive especially in well lit areas. Night mode is a joy to use as with any HUAWEI device. At the front is a teardrop notch with a 5MP Camera is still quite decent to be honest.

Performance
Performance wise, the Nova Y61 is paired with the Snapdragon 680 chipset. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 is fast enough to handle games like FREE FIRE, PUBG MOBILE, Mobile Legends and even CODM. Huawei offers the phone with either a 4/64 or 6/128 configuration as well.
The Nova Y61 also comes with a 5000mAh battery which allows you to binge watch your favorite movies, and still have enough juice to get through the day. Paired with the 22.5 W HUAWEI SuperCharge which comes with Battery Safety Assistant and 20-Layer Battery Protection and you got yourself a potent combination. I have yet to experience the need to charge my phone during a day’s worth of usage thanks to its battery capacity and efficiency.
Verdict
“HUAWEI has come a long way. The NOVA Y61 is very impressive and should be at the top of your Christmas list if you’re looking into getting a new phone. Despite not having google support, HUAWEI was still able to deliver on the APP department so that to me, is not a deal breaker. Good job on delivering an impressive phone HUAWEI. We in TechG3 really enjoyed the phone. ” – Rachelle P. ( Founder and Tech reviewer of Techg3.com )
